Digital DayLab, ChoreoLab Edition, DanceWorks Chicago’s version of a One-Day Workshop, is open to advanced/professional level dancers 15+ on the Zoom platform this summer. Join us for one or both DayLab_ChoreoLab Edition sessions and immerse yourself in a professional environment geared to training, creating, sharing, and networking.

DanceWorks Chicago is excited to welcome OSCAR RAMOS to lead this Digital DayLab!

From Cidra, Puerto Rico, OSCAR RAMOS began training at the conservatory of Ballet Concierto de Puerto Rico. Ramos started his professional career with the company in 2000 and was recognized as Ballet Dancer of the Year 2002.  In 2003, he moved to New York City to train at the Ailey School Fellowship Program under Denise Jefferson and Francisco Martinez. From 2004 to 2006, Ramos danced with Hubbard Street 2 under the direction of Julie Nakagawa, dancing works by Robert Battle, Edwaard Liang, Christian Spuck and Alex Ketley. Ramos joined Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet in New York City in 2007, creating original works with internationally-acclaimed choreographers Benoit-Swan Pouffer, Crystal Pite, Hofesh Shechter, Jacopo Godani, Alexander Ekman and Stijn Celis. He also appeared with Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet in the 2011 film The Adjustment Bureau with Matt Damon and Emily Blunt. In 2012, Ramos joined the world-renowned Batsheva Dance Company under the direction of Ohad Naharin. During his time with Batsheva, he participated in Naharin’s original creations The Hole and Last Work. Ramos also has been part of two documentaries by Israeli film director Tomer Heymann, Out of Focus and Mr. Gaga. Ramos has guested with Robyn Mineko & Artists, Aszure Barton & Artists, Göteborg Dance Company, Drew Jacoby Works and in Antwerp at the Royal Ballet of Flanders and Eastman under the artistic direction of Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. He joined Eastman as performer and assistant choreographer in 2017, working on the feature film GIRL directed by Lukas Dhont and Universal Machine directed by Daniel Askill, both with choreography by Cherkaoui. Ramos has danced in various operas, Satyagraha by Phillip Glass, Shell Shock by Nicolas Lens, and as an original cast member in Pelléas et Mélisande, an opera directed by Cherkaoui, Damien Jalet and Marina Abramovic. He has been engaged as a rehearsal director and teacher with Rambert Dance in London and Nogelhus Shia Productions in Oslo, as well as worked at Eastman summer intensives in Antwerp. In addition to teaching Cherkaoui repertory, Ramos is exploring his choreography based in ballet, conditioning, Gaga and improv. He guested at the Royal Ballet of Flanders as Ballet Master for Belgian choreographer Alan Platel’s re-staging of C(h)ours.

  • 2pm-2:30pm, Q & A with Oscar and DanceWorks Chicago Artistic Director Julie Nakagawa
